Tooling and Plate Cost: Why Is the First Order Expensive?
Why the cutting die and printing plates are one-off costs, why they make the first order expensive, and how they become an advantage on reorders.
"Why is the first order so expensive?" It's the question packaging buyers ask most. The answer is one phrase: one-off costs. The cutting die and printing plates are paid once, independent of quantity — and managing them correctly protects both buyer and manufacturer.
- The cutting die and plates are one-off costs, independent of order quantity.
- They should not be baked into the unit price as a constant; divide them across the quantity as a "fixed-cost share".
- On reorders the die already exists, so the one-off cost is zeroed and unit price drops noticeably.
What are the one-off costs?
- Cutting die: the wood + blade tool that cuts the box shape. Made once per custom size.
- Printing plates: prepared separately for each print colour. 4 colours = 4 plates.
- Machine setup/make-ready waste: the material and time the press and die-cutter consume before they're correctly dialled in.
Why is the first order expensive?
Because when the one-off cost is divided across few units, each box carries a huge share. Let's see the same ₺8,700 one-off cost at different quantities:
At 1,000 units the tooling share is ₺8.70 per box; at 50,000 it becomes almost invisible. This curve is also the basis of the minimum order quantity (MOQ) logic.
The correct method: fixed-cost share
Fixed-Cost Share = One-off Costs ÷ Order Quantity
You add this share to the variable cost and apply the margin. See the whole calculation in the packaging pricing guide.
If you add the one-off cost into the unit price as a constant, you charge the customer for the die a second time on the reorder — even though the die is sitting with you. That's both unfair and uncompetitive.
Reorders: your hidden advantage
The die and plates are stored at the manufacturer. On a second order only variable cost + margin apply; the one-off lines are zeroed. So on a reorder you can offer a more competitive price and protect your margin. We detail the discount strategy in profit margin.
