How is a rope-handle paper bag made?

The process starts like a carton and ends differently. The sheet is printed, then coated with lamination or varnish. It is die-cut, folded, and the side seam is glued. Standard so far.

The difference is the last step. The mouth of the bag is folded inward, usually with a thin board reinforcement strip inside it. The holes are punched through that thickened area. Then the rope is threaded by hand and knotted, or fixed with a metal eyelet. In most workshops this is still manual work. A thousand bags means threading rope a thousand times. So the cost of the handle is not the price per metre of rope; it is the labour.

The rope itself has plenty of variants: twisted cotton, polyester, flat tape, satin ribbon, woven cord. Prices here can double or triple. Paying more for the handle than for the board is more common than you would guess.

This is the decision buyers get wrong most often. A die-cut bag has no separate handle; a grip hole is cut into the reinforced mouth and you carry it directly. Structurally it is the same bag. The only difference is where the handle comes from.

The choice sits between product weight and brand perception. Handing over a perfume box in a satin-ribbon bag makes sense. Handing over a loaf of bread in the same bag is burning money. And when weight goes up, grammage has to go up with it, or the failure shows up around the handle area rather than in the handle.

Which board, and how many grams?

Dropping the grammage looks like a saving at first. But a paper bag almost always fails in the same spot: around the handle hole. What you pay there is not the price of board. It is a shopping trip that fell apart in the customer's hand.

Why did demand for paper bags grow?

In Turkey, the plastic bag charge introduced at the start of 2019 expanded this market directly. According to the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, after the rule took effect plastic bag use fell by 75 percent (Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation). Paper bags filled most of the gap.

For a buyer, that has one practical consequence. The paper bag is no longer just a carrier; it is the brand's most visible face on the street. Budgets for print quality and surface finishing went up accordingly.

How do you bring the cost down?

Start by revisiting the handle. If the product is light and the brand can live with it, a die-cut handle comes out meaningfully cheaper on identical board. Second, don't overreach on rope type; satin ribbon is lovely, but it is not required on every product.

Third, keep the size standard. Shifting the dimensions by a couple of centimetres can change how many bags come off one sheet, and the unit cost follows. Fourth, keep the colour count to what the design actually needs. Pushing a two-colour design to four colours doubles the cost on both the plate and the press side.
