What is a side-seam glued box?
Picture a carton laid flat. In the middle are the body panels, and along one edge there's a thin strip: the glue flap. In production this strip is glued and pressed onto the opposite panel. The flat board becomes a tube that folds flat and pops back into a box at filling.
Because the gluing happens on a single side edge, this type is called "side-seam" or "back-seam" glued. The base and lid work separately: either a locked (crash-lock) base or a plain tuck. So "glued" here means only that one seam, not the whole box.
Why does the seam location matter?
It looks minor but decides a lot. First, strength: the seam is the box's weakest line. If the glue flap is too narrow or the glue is weak, the box opens in transit. Too wide and you waste material.
Then the look. The seam is usually placed on the back or side face, not the front, because the glue line can leave a faint mark in print, and the brand face has to stay clean. Keeping print and seam from overlapping means the design has to be set up correctly from the start.
There's also the glue itself. Cold glue is economical; hotmelt sets fast and holds strong; for oily or damp products the glue choice matters, because the wrong glue lets go over time.

If the product is light and flat, a side-seam folding carton is the first and usually the right choice. When you need a premium or gift feel, a rigid box steps in, but that's a different cost class.
